The Third Way?: Community Media

The Daily Grind. Wake up, shower and we are on our way to either classes or work. The local news

 channel on television turned on, the national radio frequencies blasting in our cars, the daily newspapers we pick up along the way. We are all engaging in what is known as the mainstream media. We are all to a

 certain degree; audiences to the mainstream/mass media around us, but what we process or what we deem as legitimate from what we read and hear; lies in our own hands. 

"Although our media institutions are structured according to to political systems, there is a limit to how much political science literature can teach us about the media" (Rennie. E 2006)

Mainstream media is the media that is familiar to the masses and in essence catered for the masses; and in 

many countries this form of the media is controlled and primarily financed by the government which brings up the notion of the media being politically influenced by its financiers; the government. Mainstream

 media is often viewed negatively in not allowing freedom of expression. 

Ultimately what we wish to assimilate of the mass media into our lives is subjective; which brings me to the

 concept of Community Media. "Community media is generally defined as media that allows for access and

 participation" (Rennie.E 2006) 

It is opposed to the characteristics of mainstream mass media. Community media is defined as revolutionary, independent, alternative and radical by its identification of it even being participatory in engagement and

 activity of expression. Community media is not in existence to complement the mainstream media but instead works along the framework of overthrowing the power of the mass media. 

Fundamentally it is not funded by the government but instead involves people from everyday society whereby the media produced either through print/digital or audio publication can be of personal creativity but when 

shared with others of the same mind it then becomes part of the community's culture.

Community media prides itself on being a communication platform where communication is a two way street rather than mainstream media which is often criticised as being oppressively lineared in one direction.

So, can community media be seen as a powerful discourse for communication between people in society? 

Studies have shown that this trend of community media can be found to be a powerful tool in leading to social change within cultures and society, and as such is arguably being called the 'Third Way'. It is able to bring 

communities together, able to help communities educate themselves on different perspectives and in majority of these cases; politically. 

Civil society in this context helps community media flourish as civil society ideally does not engage or have

 any links to governments or the public sphere instead it prides itself on being non governmentally linked which works to the benefit of community media. "Community Media should therefore be seen as a means to the maintenance and extension of civil society by civil society itself" (Rennie.E 2006)

Community Media played an integral role in the development and mobilisation of the movement against 
Apartheid in South Africa. Community Media acted as a catalyst of change that educated the oppressed and brought awareness to the people on the change necessary. South Africa now has the Independent 

Broadcasting Authority Act which is committed to community media as a result of the effectiveness of it.

Community Media has significance in the world today alongside Mainstream Media The mass media is

 available to everyone in society and ideally means that everyone has access to the same information,

 however it is safe to say that mainstream media is rarely anything more than just; Mainstream. Community

 Media is proving to be a growing phenomenon which enables many unfortunate or just outspoken 
individuals within society to engage with others and bring issues to the forefront; as such labelled the 'Third Way'. 

Of course in hindsight it can be said that lines between community media and mainstream media could be 

blurred. "Long running alternative media, whatever their content have more formally in common with

 mainstream media" (Downing, John.D.H, 2010). Community Media needs to play within its own rules and

 regulations and constantly be conscious on not becoming what it adamantly opposes; the mainstream media. In my opinion there is no need for community media to overthrow mainstream media but rather exist 

alongside so that the media platforms available become even more balanced and inclusive of all.
